Gaps in between floorboards often create cold draughts and chilly rooms, filling or sealing these gaps is a very popular project as more and more and more people succumb to the joys of restored original wooden flooring. Although there are several ways to seal floorboard gaps we recommend the use of our product DraughtEx, as it is quick, easy to install and requires no adhesives.
Traditional methods of filling in the gaps between your floorboards include the use of papier-mâché, wood filler, silicon, wood glue mixed with sawdust and even expanding spray foam. It is important to remember that all these solutions will be visible from the top of the floor, and will only typically last one full year due the expansion and contraction of wooden floorboards through the warm and cold weather. Once your floorboards have been sanded and finished with your chosen varnish or lacquer, you should allow the floorboards to completely dry and for the finish to reach maximum hardness, which is typically 48 hours. Once dried, you can fill the gaps using DraughtEx with minimum effort and with no need to sand and finish them again.
Preparation
If you are fitting DraughtEx to existing floorboards you should make sure that the gaps between floorboards are clean and free from debris. This can be removed using an appropriate tool such as an old credit card or a screwdriver. When removing debris between floorboards, care should be taken to avoid any electrical wiring or pipe work that may be hidden under the floor.
Fitting
Using an old credit, blunt knife or another appropriate tool; push DraughtEx into the floorboard gap next to the skirting board. After the sealant has been inserted into the first 1 - 2 inches of the gap and the end is firmly in place, use the applicator to gently push the DraughtEx down to the level of the floorboard joist for the remainder of the gap. Once DraughtEx has been installed to within 2 inches of the opposing skirting board, the final length of the gap must be measured and the sealant trimmed accordingly. Once the whole floor has been insulated.
DraughtEx produces a fantastic natural look to your floorboards whilst keeping cold draughts at bay.
