ARDEX UK, world leaders in premium performance tile fixing products and support services, once again worked in partnership with Cerface Limited Floor and Wall Tiling Contractors of Gillingham in Kent, to provide the tiling solution for a £2.5 million restoration project at the world famous ZSL (Zoological Society of London) London Zoo.

An important part of ZSL London Zoo’s heritage, Blackburn Pavilion provides a tranquil tropical home for more than 50 different species of birds.

Originally built in 1883 as a Reptile House, this striking Victorian building has been restored to provide the birds with their very own ‘tropical bird house’. Blackburn Pavilion provides safe surroundings for species that are in danger of becoming extinct or already extinct in the wild. It offers an abundance of space for the birds to fly through a mix of foliage, allowing visitors to feel like they are meandering through the heart of the Amazon!

The Entrance and Viewing Areas of Blackburn Pavilion, 150m² area, were tiled with 322mm x 322mm Rainforest porcelain tiles in two colours, Ash and White. These were laid in a chequered pattern and to complement it; 159mm x 159mm Ash coloured tiles were set as a skirting throughout. To fix the tiles, Cerface Limited used ARDEX X 7 R Rapid Setting Flexible Tile Adhesive as it is a highly proven, premium performance tile adhesive, suitable for fixing all types of wall and floor tiles including porcelain. With a C2 FT classification, ARDEX X 7 R is the ideal choice for projects that require a fast track installation, as it is ready to be walked on and grouted just 2 hours after application. Additional features of ARDEX X 7 R include excellent slump resistance, superior application properties and suitability for use with underfloor heating, as well as being ideal for both internal and external locations.

To complete this prestigious project, ARDEX-FLEX FL Rapid Setting, Flexible Tile Grout with built-in admix, was chosen in grey to grout all of the tile joints. Key benefits of ARDEX-FLEX FL tile grout include flexibility, water repellence, ease of application and dirt resistance.
