Testing Floors For Flammability

SATRA Technology Centre has invested more than £50,000 in flammability testing equipment for its growing floor covering testing department.

Part of SATRA’s ongoing strategy to develop a ‘one stop shop’ for the floor coverings sector, the equipment includes machinery that can subject floors to a radiant heat source, evaluating the flooring materials to BS EN ISO 9239: Part 1. This data will then be used to certify floor coverings to UK National Regulations using a Euro-classification system.

SATRA has also purchased a direct impingement of flame test machine, which can test materials to BS EN ISO 11925: Part 2. This will be used to assess construction product materials, which includes walls and ceilings as well as floors and floor coverings, to Class E. The Class E is a typical level of fire resistance that some architects specify for materials and products in a building depending on its intended use.

This investment will benefit SATRA customers by reducing turnaround times for testing. It will also enable floor covering product suppliers to use the test results constructively as part of their product labeling and promotion. Potential buyers of floor coverings can have products tested before installation to help eradicate future problems.
