Chromos claims "wooden floor coating range beats legislative compliance levels by up to 75%"
"According to research carried out on the main brands of wooden floor coatings, Chromoden Aqua has by far the lowest VOC level," claims Chromos UK & Ireland Product Manager, Bob Harris. "Our level varies from 30 to 90 grams/litre across the entire range where as the market seems to be generally 90 grams/litre or higher."
In addition, these impressive figures are not only up to 75% lower than those set by the European Product Directive which is finally due to come into force next January, but have also lead to awards from institutions and official bodies from Moscow to the USA and London. These include the International Invention of the Year awarded by the British Inventors Society.
Water-based coating systems offer all the advantages of solvent based products - such as fast drying, durability and domestic spillage resistance - but they have the added benefits of low VOC, low odour, non-flammability and retention of the wood's natural colour where solvent based alternatives tend to darken the appearance.
Some water-based urethane coatings are, however, modified with cheaper acrylic resins which deteriorate the lacquer's performance properties. So for the best levels of resistance and durability, particularly in medium to high traffic areas, it is important to opt for a 100% polyurethane based product.
Manufactured in Croatia and launched in the UK early this year, Chromoden Aqua includes a full range of water-based products for installing, protecting, decorating and colouring solid wood flooring. It is available through the Bollom Group which has been appointed as sole distributor for both the UK and Republic of Ireland.
"For the next generation of coatings we are aiming to get the VOC levels down as close as possible to zero - whilst, of course, retaining all the performance benefits," added Bob Harris. "Hopefully we will have products available as early as next year."
